"By education, I mean an all-round drawing out of the best in child and man, in body, mind and spirit”. This is the vision of Mahatma Gandhi about education. Any institution which fails to shape a generation with moral values and ethical principles is not worth being called an educational institution. Our nation and the whole world are passing through one of the most difficult phases of human history. Our age has reached insurmountable heights in the field of science and technology. We have succeeded to some extent in giving literacy to millions and eradicating poverty.
Modern technology and communication facilities have brought the human race into one tiny family. This is only one side of the picture. Men are grouped in the name of a region, religion, caste, language, race, etc. Global terrorism and blood-shedding are increasing day by day. What is frightening us is the fact that a good number of people attracted to terrorism are well-educated young people.
What are we imparting to our younger generation through our education system? Hatred or love? Are we forming terrorists or philanthropists? There are some basic defects in our education system, and it is doubted. Here Gandhian vision of education is very relevant today. A radical restructuring of today’s education system is the need of the hour. Instead of giving knowledge to our students, we have to make them wise people.
There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge hence makes many changes in an individual but wisdom transforms a person to discern between what is good and bad, truth and falsehood, momentary and everlasting, etc. Such a kind of wisdom has been handed over to us by Sree Buddha, Swami Vivekananda, Gandhiji, and so on.
What we have been trying to do in the last 61 years through our School St. John’s Model Higher Secondary School, is a humble pursuit to mold a future generation having wisdom. We don’t know how far we have succeeded in this mission. The answer rests with the future. Established in the year 1957 by the late Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. Benedict Mar Gregorios, this school marked a steady and astonishing growth and development in these years.
In 1990 St. John’s school was upgraded as a mixed school. The most remarkable breakthrough in its development was in the year 2000 when higher secondary batches were sanctioned. The leap was so high as the allotted number of batches were eight. In the year 2001, we started English medium classes in the high school section. In 2002 and 2004 two new blocks were constructed for the school.
When we completed 60 years of our journey our school reached the zenith of its glory by bagging overall trophy in the sub-district Kalothsavam, many 1st positions in the state Kalothsavam, 100% pass in the SSLC exam, a high number of full A+ and a high pass percentage in plus two examinations. To cap all these achievements our Headmaster had been awarded with the best teacher state award this year. We firmly believe that the grace of god strengthened and guided us all these years.
These achievements are the result of the joint effort of our teaching and office staff. I believe that there are miles and miles to go ahead. The mighty God will lead us in the future also.
